Dr. Lambiris strives to deliver the best blepharoplasty Sarasota has to offer. He offers a variety of blepharoplasty techniques aimed to correct signs of aging such as pronounced eyelids and wrinkles as well as excessive fat and skin in the orbital eye area. He takes a careful approach when it comes to treating his patients’ eyes, providing natural-looking eye rejuvenation in Sarasota with minimal scarring and downtime.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

The eye area frequently ages faster than other parts of the face as the skin is thinner and more delicate. After age 35, gravity takes a toll on the surrounding eye muscles and fat pads, distorting the eyes and often leaving them with a tired, sad and heavy look.

Many patients develop prominent eyelids, sagging skin, under-eye bags, tear trough hollows, and dark circles due to aging, poor sleep, and genetic predisposition. These issues can be difficult or impossible to treat with over-the-counter remedies and skincare products. Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that alters the skin, fat, and muscles around the eyes to refresh the eye area and alleviate a host of cosmetic concerns related to aging. It is also sometimes referred to as an eye lift or eyelid lift.

These are some of the possible advantages our Sarasota blepharoplasty patients may experience after surgery:

  • Improved peripheral vision
  • More youthful, well rested and alert eyes

A more refreshed and rested overall appearance.

Blepharoplasty Procedures

There are several types of eye lifts that Dr. Lambiris offers to rejuvenate the eye area. Together, you will discuss the various plastic surgical solutions that might be right for you.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty corrects heavy or hooded upper lids by repositioning or resecting the excess skin, fat, and muscles with an incision hidden in the eyelid crease.

Quad Blepharoplasty

The quad eye lift refreshes both the lower and upper eyelids in one surgery by making alterations to the skin, fat pads, and musculature as needed.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

There are several lower eye lift procedures. Among them is the pinch eyelid technique, which removes excess tissue from prominent lower lids without altering the underlying fat or muscle layer. Another is the transconjunctival blepharoplasty technique, which places a small incision on the lower eyelid conjunctiva through which Dr. Lambiris adjusts the fat, muscle, and skin. There are also transcutaneous blepharoplasty methods, which can sometimes be combined with suspending the orbicularis muscle for lateral eye lifting (canthoplasty) while also adjusting the fat pads and excessive skin for smoother, firmer lower eyelid contours.

Who is a candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty may be appropriate for patients who have one or more eye aging concerns such as:

  • Heavy upper lids
  • Hollow tear troughs
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Swollen or puffy lower eyelids
  • Excess fat and skin below the brows
  • Gravitational sagging of the soft tissues around the eyes

The ideal candidate for blepharoplasty is a nonsmoker who has good overall health and realistic expectations about what cosmetic surgery can do. Certain medical conditions may preclude some individuals from having cosmetic surgery. To determine if you are a candidate for blepharoplasty, schedule a private consultation with Dr. Lambiris.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Dr. Lambiris applies eye ointment and sterile bandages to protect against contamination. Swelling and bruising are prominent immediately after the procedure.

These effects tend to subside in the first two weeks but may persist longer. Blurry vision and grogginess from anesthesia are to be expected. Driving is not permitted for at least 24 hours or until these effects resolve. Blepharoplasty downtime varies based on the extent of surgery. Most patients take two to four weeks off work to recover. Physical exertion, including exercise and heavy lifting, is restricted in the first six weeks post-op. Avoid the use of nicotine products for at least six weeks and follow all aftercare instructions as directed to facilitate a successful recovery.

Insurance does not cover cosmetic facial surgery, including blepharoplasty.

Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that 90% of patients pursue eyelid surgery after age 40. However, eyelid surgery may be considered in younger patients who have naturally hooded eyes or downturned eye corners.

Eye lifting can take as much as 5 to 10 years off your appearance depending on the extent of surgery.

Canthopexy tightens the canthal tendon with sutures to elevate the lateral portion of the eye without structurally altering the canthal tendon or surrounding soft tissues. Canthoplasty is a more complex procedure that reconstructs the canthal tendon with partial resection of the inferior portion of the tendon to shorten the lower eyelid followed by tightening the canthal tendon with a suture to lift the outermost portion of the eye.

The surgery is painless due to local or general anesthesia. Patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. Dr. Lambiris may prescribe analgesics for pain relief as needed.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) involves making changes to the soft tissues around the eyes to make the orbital eye area appear more youthful. A forehead lift (also called a brow lift) elevates the tissues of the forehead with incisions at the hairline to reduce forehead wrinkles and laxity in the upper third of the face. In doing so, it raises the position of heavy brows, which can open up the eye area to a degree. However, a forehead lift is not designed to correct cosmetic concerns of the eye area and has limited eye rejuvenation effects.

If facial aging concerns are isolated to the area between the brow and tear trough, blepharoplasty is the appropriate choice. If the patient’s primary concerns are sagging brows and signs of aging on the forehead, a forehead lift is suitable. Dr. Lambiris may suggest a combined procedure if both areas are of concern.

Alternatives such as nonsurgical eye rejuvenation and wrinkle relaxants such as Botox for crow’s feet may be considered for patients who are not quite ready for blepharoplasty.

Dr. Lambiris hides the scar in the natural creases of the eyelids and conjunctiva to minimize scarring.
