Significant weight loss can be life-changing. Whether it comes through lifestyle change, bariatric surgery, medically supervised weight management, or GLP-1 medication, it often represents a great deal of commitment.
For some patients, reaching a healthier or more stable weight also brings new body-contour concerns. Loose skin, changes in breast volume, abdominal laxity, arm skin, thigh skin, and shifts in body proportion can be difficult to address with exercise alone.
For others, these changes do not create a concern that requires surgery at all. Both experiences are normal.
The purpose of a post-weight-loss body-contouring consultation is not to tell patients they need more procedures. It is to discuss what is possible if excess skin or body contour is affecting comfort, clothing fit, activity, hygiene, or confidence.
One of the most important parts of planning body-contouring surgery is weight stability.
When weight is still changing significantly, skin and body contours may continue to change as well. Planning surgery too early can make results less predictable and may increase the chance that future changes affect the outcome.
Before moving forward, I consider:
The exact timeline is individual. For patients using GLP-1 medications, body-contouring conversations should be coordinated thoughtfully with their medical weight-management provider.
Post-weight-loss body-contouring plans may include discussion of:
Not every patient needs all of these procedures. A safe plan is built around the areas that matter most to you and what can reasonably be addressed in surgery and recovery.
Body contouring surgery removes or reshapes excess skin and selected tissue. It is not a weight-loss method and does not replace nutrition, movement, medical follow-up, or long-term health habits.
The most durable results generally come from combining a stable weight with realistic expectations and a commitment to maintaining overall health after surgery.
Some concerns may be better addressed first with skin care, laser treatment, injectables, medical weight management, or time. Some patients simply need their body to stabilize before making any aesthetic decision.
Diana Born, APRN-C provides medical weight-management care at West Coast Plastic Surgery. For patients who are still actively changing weight, beginning with that medical conversation may be the most appropriate next step.
Your consultation begins with a conversation about what has changed, what is bothering you, and what you want to feel more comfortable doing or wearing. I examine the areas of concern, review your health history, and discuss options honestly.
If surgery is appropriate, we build a plan around safety, recovery, and your goals. If it is not the right time, I will explain why and help you understand the next best step.
The best time depends on stable weight, health, nutrition, medical history, and personal readiness. A consultation is needed to discuss your timeline.
Possibly. Surgical planning should be coordinated around your medical weight-management care, stable weight, nutrition, and overall health.
Surgery can address selected areas of excess skin, but no procedure makes every area perfect. We discuss realistic goals during consultation.
For some patients, yes. Whether procedures can be safely combined depends on health, the surgical plan, and recovery needs.
